Geographic Distribution:

  • Widely distributed across North America, Europe, and Asia

  • Grows on decaying hardwood logs and stumps, particularly oak, beech, and maple

Preferred Nutrients / Substrates:

  • Decaying hardwood is the primary substrate

  • Thrives on nutrient-rich, moist wood; often colonizes older logs and stumps

Edibility / Toxicity:

  • Bitter and generally considered inedible

  • Not toxic, but the taste is unpleasant and not suitable for culinary use

Life Cycle Time Frame:

  • Fruiting: Late spring through fall

  • Mycelial colonization: Can persist year-round in decayed wood

  • Spore production: Continuous once the fruiting body is mature

Fruiting Conditions / Environmental Needs:

  • Moist, shaded forests
